  PHOENIX PICKS
life + style in the Valley of the Sun
June 5th, 2009

Gone are the days of traipsing outdoors in pretty frocks and leggings; we can no longer wear them because they immediately become drenched in sweat. The time has come when the gates of hell are open for the next five months, and we hole up in our window-blackened house and drape ourselves across the AC vents in as little clothing as possible.

The plus side to all of this is that it’s so hot we can’t stand the thought of cooking, so we’re stuck to a strict diet of popsicles, frozen yogurt and fruit. Not surprisingly, we’ve managed to drop a few pounds, although we’re pretty sure most of it is the three gallons of sweat we lose each day fetching the mail.

We can barely drag ourselves to work, let alone find the energy to participate in outdoor activities, so the next few issues we’ll be focusing on places that have great air conditioning. If you have any secret locales where you go to escape Satan’s wrath, e-mail us at picks@phoenixpicks.com.

Line’ em Up

Pushing open Lindsay Lou’s huge wooden door takes some strength, but it’s well worth it when you see the enviable fashions and accessories inside. It looks more like a saloon than a clothing store, and we’re struck by the elegant Western vibe that screams rhinestone cowgirl (with an edge).

We admit it—we lurve watching “Millionaire Matchmaker” and we cheered when the first female millionaire met her smoking-hot beau. Even better is that she is the founder of Young Fabulous & Broke, an adorable clothing line you can find at Lindsay Lou, along with Splendid, J Brand jeans, LaRok, Ella Moss, and Gryphon leather and suede jackets with fringe.

With flip flops, “Gossip Girl”-inspired headbands by Jennifer Behr, CC Sky jewelry, and cowboy boots, this is where you want to come to dress like a celebutante, and you can thank Lindsay for the funky décor that is made up of her private collection of vintage stamped purses, cowboy boots, and Buddhas. BTW, a huge sale is going on this week—don’t miss it!

Readers, Digest!

“So that’s how you deal with the heat,” stated our San Franciscan visitor resolutely. “You just stay indoors all season.” We stared out the window of our 73-degree, climate-controlled home and decided that summer in the Valley of the Sun would not get the better of us or our visitor from the north.

Located in the urban-chic SouthBridge District of downtown Scottsdale, Digestif offers exactly the type of laid-back, Cali-cool experience that could draw any Phoenician out of their summertime woes. Chef Payton Curry is committed to serving seasonal, locally grown ingredients and he is passionate about his guests’ farm-to-table experience. The dining room is a self-described “Beatnick Basement” with exposed brick and dark wood furniture. The space is accented with a charcuterie bar and the Digestif bar, equipped with absinthe fountains and grand, cascading shelves stocking an impressive collection of spirits.

Digestif boasts a variety of house-made charcuterie, hearth baked crostatas, and pastas made by hand daily. We loved our “Cal-Ital” foodie experience and are already planning our next visit. Mangia, dudes.

Like We Give a Knit

When we were but wee Phoenix Pickers, our dear Grandmère tried to teach us to knit. We sat there, our tiny hands sweating as we struggled to grasp the giant needles and damp yarn. The whole experience came to a head when we stabbed our beloved teddy bear in the face, threw the tangled mess across the room and burst into tears. Grandmère stuck to less difficult pastimes from then on, like coloring.

Recently we were trying to figure out a way to soothe our jangled nerves. Drinking seemed too common, we don’t “do” running and we’ve long since lost our crayons, but we decided to give knitting another go. We quickly fell into the lullabye motion and mindless counting. Since then, we’ve been on a knitting bender and are always looking for our next fix.

Enter Knit Happens in Scottsdale. Full of drool-worthy, gorgeous yarns, amazing patterns and weekend knitting classes, we’re in craft heaven. It does our soul good to be surrounded by skeins of vibrant colors and textures, and so far we’ve managed to avoid stabbing anything with our needles.

Windows of the Soul

Lasik surgery ruined us. Instead of waking up with the early rays of a summer morning refreshed and thankful for being alive, we’ve got the hiss of a vampire and the need for some serious eye protection until our eyeballs adjust to daylight.

Even with bedhead and morning breath, we’re all about channeling our style muse Greta Garbo and giving her some Malibu-infused flavor flave. Our latest eye candy happens to be Sama’s Garbo frames by Badgley Mischka Eye Couture. We can’t seem to kick the Hollywood in our blood!

Bonjour, Ma Dame

We’re making a bold confession here—we can’t stand store-bought deodorant. It compromises our black ensembles with little gray armpit patches and once our pheromones adjust to it… talk about eau de cat pee!

So how do we combat stinky pits? By dousing them with Jean Paul Gaultier. Our new favorite is Ma Dame, comprised of summertime notes such as orange zest, rose, musk and cedarwood. It’s feminine with a stud belt and five-inch heels—think biker chic paired with a floral frock.

Infinity and Beyond

We dream of shoe closets lined with shelves of stilettos, wedges, boots, ballet flats and more—we could buy nothing but shoes for the rest of our lives. Sadly, we don’t have the scratch for a million different pairs of kicks, but we do have Mohop shoes.

They’re actually one pair of wooden soles, but have infinite design options created by different ribbons laced multiple ways through elastic loops. Between the grosgrain, metallic, striped and satin ribbons and a million different tie options, it’s the perfect summer sandal.
