May 1st, 2009
We just moved into a sassy little home of our very own (okay, we’re renting, but who’s counting) and we’re hearting the whole nesting process. Who would have thought? We might as well throw on an apron and some pearls and call it a day! From adorable, vintage mixing bowls to kitschy throw pillows to sassy bed linens, we’re scrounging around each and every boutique we can find. We’re pretty sure the lovely ladies who work there are getting more than a little tired of us popping in every other day to ask if they’ve gotten in anything new.
While the place is coming together, there are still some finishing touches that need to happen. As we continue to channel our happy homemaker side, we invite you to forward this email to 5 or more of your best gal pals and CC picks@phoenixpicks.com. If you’re one of the first three, you’ll receive a FREE dozen of Sid’s Viciously Good Cookies—the most amazing cookies you’ll ever binge and purge on (see below for details). Trust us, they’ll turn you into a fiend like Nancy Spungen! |

Brazilian Wax-iness
While we were one of the (rare) good brides who didn’t subscribe to the “It’s My Day and I’m the Princess” philosophy, we do admit that we indulged in a wee bit of pampering—we got waxed. No, not our eyebrows. Or our legs. That’s right, we got our lady bits did. All the way. And while there is nothing enjoyable about having the-hairs-down-there ripped out of your body, we have to admit that we have never felt more sexy (and the new hubby certainly enjoyed it).
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and boy did it ever. Instead of smooth and lovely, we’re pokey and scratchy. Needless to say, we turned to our new beauty savior, the Suddenly Slimmer Spa in Phoenix.
With every spa offering a girl could imagine, Suddenly Slimmer Spa is clean, gorgeous and the staff is amazingly nice. Not only did they help prune our garden, but they did it expertly and (almost) painlessly. Now if only we could convince the hubby that he should indulge in some of the manscaping services they offer!

Attainable Sustainable
Paging Dr. Freud! With the wacked-out dreams we’ve been having these days, we’re going to need a full analysis, stat. We are desperately searching for our well-worn high-school copy of “The Dream Dictionary,” but until we find it, we’ll just have to wonder what it all means.
Like the one where we are being escorted barefoot down the street to our wedding by a certain local news reporter, even though we hadn’t even bought a dress yet or actually planned the (fictional) event. Or what about the one where we were dating Ben Folds? Ok, that one was awesome.
Then there was the one where we stumbled into this little shop that specialized in eco-friendly clothing and accessories at pocketbook-friendly prices. Oh wait, that one was for real—it only seemed too good to be true! That little shop is eQ Eco Clothing & Accessories, providing the best in sustainable yet affordable tees, flip-flops, shades and other items perfect for the hot summer days ahead. hey believe that you shouldn’t have to give up your first born to be able to support the sustainable cause, and we think that is totally dreamy!

Nailed It
Last week we had one of those days that had us wishing Calgon could take us away. Within mere hours, we were bombarded with an epic computer fail, yet another meeting about “doing more with less,” and a nasty head cold that we had to promise everyone wasn’t the early stages of swine flu. And by the way, we’re still not sold on the Neti Pot, despite what all our friends on Facebook are saying.
A day like this can deflate the spirit. And not even the promise of a well-branded bubble bath could help. No, when faced with a stress level this high, it’s time to break out the big guns. A mani-pedi is in order, and Sundrops Nail Spot is the place to make it happen. This auspicious little Camelback Corridor shop is a luxe sanctuary where, during our treatments, we can melt into some velvety pillows, watch a movie on the plasma, or catch up on our celeb gossip with an indulgent stack of magazines. In addition to the fabulous pampering, it’s important to note that Sundrops is ultra sanitary—there are no icky whirlpool jets, and files and buffers are tossed immediately after they are used.
We left with sparkling fingers and toes—and the sparkle back in our personality. And that, friends, is how you remedy a crap-tastic day.

A Vicious Kind of Love
We all have them—those deep, dark, dirty secret loves like drinking pickle juice from the jar. But our latest obsession is one too good not to share (even though we have yet to share a cookie or two with our little bella). Sid’s Viciously Good Cookies have just what it takes to throw any preparation for swimsuit season out the door and not feel bad about doing so.
These delish treats are the hottest new darlings to hit the Valley dessert scene, so pick a dozen (or three) up today and be the first to spread the word. In no time the BFFs will trade in their rexie diets for some Peanut Buttahs and Annie Vs. P.S. The cookies will make their in-store debut on May 8 at all local AJs, until then, order them online!

Eye of the Beholder
Once, in a martini-induced stupor, our $400 designer glasses fell off of the top of our heads and into le toilette (after using it—eww). After taking care of some unsavory business, we vowed then and there to never again perch our precious specs in such a precarious manner.
Rather than don the granny-chain, we bought a chic eyeglass case from Oktak. Available in a ton of cool prints, these pretty protectors will keep your peep-wear stowed in style!

Corn Holy-O!
Vegan Tamales in Phoenix? It’s like snow falling in June—it just doesn’t exist. So when we stumbled across the Tamale Store and discovered that among their delightful tamale options (meat and vegetarian) they also have three vegan tamale offerings available for dairy-free herbivores, we freaked.
Now, we know the term “vegan” isn’t a beloved term in the Valley. We’ve experienced the uncomfortable stare-down when we’ve order cheese enchiladas without cheese. But thanks to the Tamale Store, we can finally unwrap the fiesta guilt-free… and without feeling like a complete social outcast!

We’re stunned by how many local businesses (especially boutiques) have closed in the last few months. It’s heartbreaking news. We hope that you’ll join us in making a concerted effort to keep giving those local businesses that are weathering the economic storm a little TLC. And be sure to tell them Phoenix Picks sent you! |
