  PHOENIX PICKS
life + style in the Valley of the Sun
March 20th 2009

If there’s one obsession we can never abandon it’s our love of shoes. Now that spring is here we’re prowling style.com and Fashion Week street photos looking for this season’s must-have footwear. Ironically, we’ve found it, and it’s a modern orthopedic wedge with lots of straps and buckles (as in Alexander Wang made sweet love to a pair of granny shoes circa 1987 and the result was this amazing shoe).

Quickly, however, we’re back to reality, realizing we’re in Phoenix—not Paris. And we’re not fashion editors with connects that will get us this season’s to-die-for shoe. (But we’re pretty darn close.)

Dearest readers, we’re giving away a pair of amazing heels that only fashion darlings and Cleopatra would love. Be the first to forward this email to 5 of your friends or more and CC picks@phoenixpicks.com and you could win a free pair of Form and Fauna shoes from their spring 2009 collection (see below for more info). Gone are the days when eco-conscious footwear is granola fugly; these lovelies are awesome!

Flirting with Fabulous

Finding boutiques in Scottsdale—easy. Finding one your guy will enter—hard! Well, not anymore.

Fleur’t offers 4,000 stylish square feet of celeb-inspired clothing for men and women, replete with giant chandeliers, finely upholstered chairs, and great tunes we couldn’t help but sashay to, as if we were in the VIP line. We liked that there were multicolored headbands and barrettes for the “High School Musical” crowd and Rolexes for the luxe set. We almost fell to our knees in happiness when we spied the new lip and lash lounge hosted by M.B. York, makeup artist to the stars. A must-see is the powder room we all wish we could have, mirrored from floor to ceiling with a matching jewel-encrusted chandelier and curio cabinet. We were inspired to get out our Bedazzler!

You’ll want to stop by tomorrow (Saturday, March 21) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for their first Gold-digger Party. Bring in your unwanted gold—there will be an appraiser on hand to sell it to. Take the cash, or get a 25% additional rebate with your purchase!

Jurlique Mystique

Whenever Hollywood’s starlets-du-jour become overwhelmed by the spotlight, it seems like they always hole up in some undisclosed location; maybe a bungalow at the Chateau Marmont or a spa tucked away in the hills. After all, running from the paparazzi can really get a girl down. (Or so it seems on TMZ!)

While we may not exactly be the Hollywood it-girl, we still need our own little piece of the sweet life from time to time, and for that we turned to Jurlique spa. Nestled into a corner of the chic little hideaway that is the Firesky Resort in Scottsdale, this cozy and inviting spa is the ideal place to go MIA for bit and indulge in some serious pampering.

Our purveyor of the star treatment was the fabulous Wilmarie, who cleansed, exfoliated, and moisturized us, giving us the desired Hollywood glow. She even taught us the do’s and don’ts of skincare for big girls. (Apparently the regime we adopted in 8th grade isn’t cutting it anymore!) It’s all for the best, since now we know the secrets for close-up ready skin.

Pretty in Pink

The night of our junior prom we experienced the classic teen trauma—the prom queen and four other girls were wearing the same aqua-green sequin dress we had on. After that, we learned a few things from Molly Ringwald’s character in “Pretty in Pink,” like reconstructing vintage dresses into one-of-a-kind masterpieces. For senior prom, we had an uber-hunky granola boy named Henry as our date and a dress we hand-designed. No other gal came even close.

That night was magical, and the next day, even better. We took Henry to the cornfields by Desert Sky Pavilion where we made out in an old VW Bug with Neil Young singing live in the background. It reminds us that Phoenix is still a great place for uncovering treasures—like the Pink House in Glendale.

It’s a “store within a store” concept with handcrafted and creative conceptual clothing, accessories and home goods. Whether you need a rockabilly or boho fix, or you want to feed your berry-gathering instinct and score something sweet that no one else in this city has, this is the place!

Cleopatra’s Weakness

Cleopatra is one of our style icons. In fact, we’ve found a well-coiffed black bob, perfect cat eyes, a lot of sass and tons of oversized jewelry is ageless and will always be en vogue.

We also imagine a woman of her caliber must possess the same kind of weakness we have for shoes. Form and Fauna’s spring 2009 offerings are sending us in a frenzy of lust and want, especially for the Cleopatra shoe. We think it’s the perfect shoe to rule the world—Hellenistic style. (And it’s eco-friendly, too.)

A Little Ruching Goes a Long Way

We’re feeling the signs of another hot, long summer.  So we’ve been stocking up on cute, breathable sundresses and tops to keep us cool and marvelous instead of ratty and sweaty.

Being on a budget, and not wanting to look like every other girl out there, we have uncovered a recessionista’s dream come true. Ruche offers sweet dresses and tops with vintage touches that complement our shoestring budget. Our next purchase is going to be this chiffon mini dress—don’t copy us!

Hammer Time!

You know you’ve jumped off the fashion bandwagon when you’re coveting really bad fashion trends you wore in junior high. (Hammer Pants, anyone?) It’s true—our favorite outfit in 8th grade was a pair of satin, electric-blue Hammer Pants with a matching bat-wing bolero.

This time around the trend has a more sophisticated ring—jodhpurs (or harem pants). All the euro-cool kids have them and they’re starting to appear stateside, too. Be the first to rock these cool looks from Pixie Market—we guarantee you’ll be the hippest momma on the block.

Don’t You Forget About Me

We always likened ourselves to Ally Sheedy’s bizarre character in “The Breakfast Club.” In high school, we joined yearbook, dressed in all black, and listened to OMD non-stop. We pretty much didn’t exist until our bestie David gave us a revamp and added some color to our cheeks. Then we broke hearts. Lots of them. Remember your good old times at Biltmore Fashion Park’s Movie in the Park series!

What: Movies in the Park: “The Breakfast Club” Screening
When: Friday, March 27, 7:30 pm
Where: Biltmore Fashion Park, 24th St. & Camelback Road

WhiteSnake Revisited

You were the tough girl with white fringe boots and feathered hair. While the other girls dreamed about owning a pony, you preferred snakes—fierce, venomous ones. If the snake still rules your heart then head on over to the White Tank Mountains Regional Park this afternoon for a snake feeding. It’s a rare opportunity, and not for the faint of heart!

What: Snake Feeding at the White Tank Mountains
When: Friday, March 20, 3–4 pm
Where: White Tank Mountains Regional Park Visitor Center
Call: 623.935.2505

Your Green Thumb

One of the best events in Phoenix has to be the annual Spring Plant Sale at Desert Botanical Garden. It’s a horticulturist’s dream with hands-on access to some of the desert’s most beautiful and rare plant species. But a word to the wise: go prepared. Stock up on water, and bring your oversized beach hat and sunscreen because it takes a full day to decide what plants to bring home.

What: Desert Botanical Garden’s Spring Plant Sale
When: Saturday, March 21, 7 am–5 pm;
Sunday, March 22, 9 am–5 pm
Where: 1201 N. Galvin Parkway
Call: 480.941.1225

It’s a beautiful time in Arizona right now, so take advantage of the amazing scenery and weather before temperatures become scorching hot and gross! Get out and enjoy the wildflower blooms around the Valley… even if it’s only a temporary happiness, it’s still something.
