  PHOENIX PICKS
life + style in the Valley of the Sun
February 6th, 2009

We remember those days when our phone number was on weekend warrior speed dial and we were always VIP at any house party or art opening. We also remembered when the phone calls stopped and our Saturday nights consisted of microwave popcorn and Skinemax.

We’ve always been a bit wary of social networking sites, especially after our experience with MySpace and being the oldest person on there. But recently a bestie forced us on Facebook. Before we knew it, we’d reconnected with people who put the sparkle and shimmer into our childhood. We’re telling you ladies, somehow being reunited with high-school pals and old BFFs not only helped this Stella get her groove back but reminded us that our awkward, geeky youth was almost better than any John Hughes flick.

P.S. If you've decided to create your own Facebook page too, and would like to update your photos with recent pics of yourself, be sure your eyebrows are arched to perfection first! Swing by Sofia Facials and Waxing for a Free Eyebrow Design and 20% off services to get your skin glowing like the good old days (see below for details!)

Organized Chaos

Shortly after realizing men are boys and dating is another word for fatigue, we went in search for something out of the ordinary. With good luck flying out the window, and our tenacity pushing us out the door for yet another one of those match.com dates, we showed up at Fogo de Chão weary and cynical only to be pleasantly awakened from the dating/dining coma we’ve been in.

And then, it hit us—first dates should be fun, not romantic, and this Southern Brazilian restaurant is the key to happiness, fullness and organized chaos complete with skewers of medium-rare joy. Every surreal cut of meat was nothing short of gluttony and divinity wrapped in bacon. We overindulged in every bite; we showed a green card every time the House Special came around and the filet mignon was angel-possessed.

The conversation was full of smiles, foreign accents and laughing out loud. To top off perfection, they house a wine list so good they’ve received Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for the past seven years. All we can say is go! Go, have fun, laugh, eat, drink wine, and you too will be out of the dating/dining desert.

Mmm… Pie.

With the way the economy is going and prices dropping the way they are, we have to confess it’s a great time to buy a house! And so we made the commitment and scored big with enough space for our endless shoe collection.

However, we’ve been struggling with decorating ideas—should we paint the guest bedroom blue? And if we do paint it blue, what happens when we finally decide to procreate and it’s a girl? She can’t have a blue room! So we’ve been scouring decorating magazines and sipping on Pinot Grigio to get our creative juices flowing.

Enter Mud Pie Home Boutique in Ahwatukee—it’s practically bursting at the seams with stylish décor items like eclectic lamps, shabby chic throw pillows and vintage-y picture frames. And now that we’re shacked up in a beautiful new home, we’ve become more aware that we must be conscientious recessionistas. We like the idea of adding a few accessories to each room to change the look with minimal investment. Oh! We feel a “Design on a Dime” moment coming on!

Baby Grand

Everyone should be so fortunate to have a mentor, and ours has always been our older sister. From what books to read to our childhood attempts to get our bangs as high as hers, she has always been our own personal “Go-To” guide for being cool.

Just like our way cooler big sis, the proprietors of the spanky new street-style boutique Grandiose are ready to take the AZ hip-hop scene under their wing. The hip kids who run the joint are transplants from established scenes like Chicago, L.A., and San Diego and are ready to show Phoenix how their big bad cities roll hip-hop culture.

You can get in their groove with a wide assortment of new and used vinyl, from hip-hop and R&B to metal and punk to random gems like “The Goonies” soundtrack. And while you’re body rockin’ to their beats, you’ll want to sample some of their street-inspired wares—check out clothing from Free Gold Watch and Mishka, plus local art, and even vintage copies of Waxpoetic magazine. It’s big!

Prepping for Summer?

One of the perks of winter is not shaving our legs. However, swimsuit season is right around the corner, which means it’s time to replace our delusional thoughts of being a 70s feminista and instead become a well-coiffed woman in a slinky bikini.

We rely on Kerry Berman at Sofia Facials and Waxing to take care of us. She has the golden touch when it comes to preparing for those days by the pool. Happily, Kerry is offering 20% off her services and a Free Eyebrow Design if you mention Phoenix Picks!

archilochus colubris

This morning while eating cereal with the little miss, we pondered and discussed some heavy thoughts and world issues. Like: if you could be any animal what would you be? She said a pink horse; and we said a bird (but not a rooster, duck or a chicken).

As you know, we have a soft spot for outlandish jewelry, and when we came across Erica Weiner’s collection of hummingbird skull necklaces, we wanted to invite Erica to our breakfast roundtable. What kind of tree would she be?

Eerie Aesthetic

We love anything that bucks conventionalism. Hirsute lovers, super-bendy people that twist up like pretzels… love’em. But when it comes to jewelry it can be downright difficult to find something that masterfully mixes odd and cool, which is why it was true love when we spied a pair of thorn studs online.

Not only do these beauties satisfy our sense of the unusual, they exude a fierce yet natural modern vibe that we adore.
