life + style in the Valley of the Sun

January 16th, 2007
“Recession chic” is quite the art form! (We have been tightening our PVC purse strings and rebrandng ourselves from label-loving fashionistas to sale-loving recessionistas.) Recently, as we combed the Valley, prowling around those beloved sales racks to feed our fashion fix, we were heartbroken to discover a few of our all-time favorite boutiques had closed up shop.
These are the same boutiques that delivered international designers and cutting-edge fashion we had seen only in New York and London. Instead of letting our inner depressionista reveal its ugly head, we’ve decided on a call-for-action: SHOP LOCAL ON A BUDGET!
Please help us keep local businesses alive during these tough times by spending your clothing allowance at local boutiques and businesses. In turn, we will deliver discounts and bargain tips from your local Mom and Pops. How about 20 percent off a facial or eyebrow waxing (see below for details)? We don’t know about you, but our burly brows could definitely use some TLC. Keep it local! |

Mama Mia!
It seems everywhere we turn, people are having babies. Siblings. Friends. We're even doing it! And along with baby comes multiple baby gifts, but we’re pretty tired of the same-old-same-old baby registries. We’d much rather give Mama-to-Be something pampering and practical—something you know not everyone in playgroup is going to have.
Mothers’ Milk Boutique fits the bill. This little spot is a new-mom’s dream. From luxurious baby blankets to stylish slings and high-end nursing bras, this store knows what fashion-forward mamas want—and need. And if they don’t have what you’re looking for, they will special order it. True to the store’s name, the boutique also offers breast pump sales and rentals and holds La Leche League meetings.
Each visit guarantees we’ll have the most unique—as well as the most practical—gift at the shower. In fact, it almost makes us want to have another one. Well, almost.

Loungeabouts
Most people use the New Year as a reason to start working on their hot body. For us, 2009 has thus far been the year of the “Home Body.” Chalk it up to post-holiday burnout, but the thought of lounging around in our chonies and eating cookie dough while watching DVR’ed episodes of “True Blood” is way more appealing than just about anything right now.
We imagine our inner social butterfly will emerge from its cocoon sooner or later, but for now we’re perfectly happy to kick it groundhog-style and stay burrowed in our hidey-hole.
The one exception that will always rouse us from our vampire-infused hibernation, however, is a trip to our new favorite neighborhood watering hole, SideBar. Just a short bike
ride away from our lair of lethargy, this retro-modern lounge boasts exposed brick walls and views of the downtown cityscape visible from their second-story location. And even though SideBar is a certified swank-tuary, its still laid-back enough to make your favorite band tee acceptable attire. How perfect for our lounging lifestyle!

All That Glitters
We remember our dorky, pre-teen birthday parties like they
were yesterday—mall bangs, stirrup pants, a chocolate-frosted sheet cake made with love by Mom, roller skating to NKOTB
and Debbie Gibson at Skateland, and hoping that cute older boy would ask us to skate during Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now.”
And who could forget those endless games of truth or dare
and girl talk? These days, birthdays are celebrated on a
more grandiose scale, and we sort of blame MTV’s “Super Sweet Sixteen.”
But if you’ve gotta bling it out, the Glitter Box boutique in Chandler has all of the latest fashions for little girls, and throws one hell of a party! They offer nine sassilicious party themes (Tutu for Toddlers, Magical Mystical Mermaid, Glitter Box Idol, Surfin’ Safari). If it was our birthday, we would want the “Perfectly Pampered Princesses” party. Each princess gets an updo, tiara, feather boa, lip gloss, rhinestone cheek appliqué, a Glitter Box t-shirt and dance lessons. It’s so good we might have to inquire about having our 30th there.

You Dearie, Are an Artist
Once the culture shock of visiting India wore off, we realized we had a zillion amazing photos... that lived in a boring, one-dimensional online album.
Enter: Plywerk photofinishing. They took our digital images and turned them into show-off-able, affordable art. Our amateur snaps of Sari shops became fabulous conversation pieces! And with V-day coming up, our friends just might be getting that “tuk-tuk” photo we snapped, thanks to the Plywerk treatment—after all, it’s original art!

Channeling June Cleaver
Before Brad Pitt came along, we used to really dig Angelina Jolie, especially when she wore a vial of Billy Bob's blood around her neck. It was outlandish and so something we
would do.
Now that "Saint Angelina" has erased her goth persona in the Hollywood history books, we have replaced our admiration with this Cleaver Pendant from Species by the Thousands, they so happen to be our new favorite designers/artist team from Brooklyn. Check them out!

Heavenly Bodies
We’re bored to death with the same old lingerie selection found out the local department stores and at a certain, ahem, secretive sister’s storefront. But just when we were about to throw undies to the wind, we discovered The Lake and Stars.
This chic online purveyor stocks a heavenly assortment of beautiful underpinnings that effortlessly exude an ethereal-beauty-meets-modern-luxe vibe that is nothing short of stunning. We’ll take two of everything please. (Hint, hint, honey.)

A Pastie Peek
So we’re a little late on the burlesque bandwagon… what can we say… we live in Phoenix! Luckily, the Trunk Space keeps us hip and is bringing the very first showing of The Pretty Things Peep Show. We can’t think of a better way to spend Valentine’s Day than with a traveling road show of vaudeville performers and mastering the art of “tease.”

Salsa Verdi
The Phoenix Opera is about to unleash another amazing production—Verdi’s “Aïda.” We can’t wait to be transported off to ancient Egypt for a few hours, captivated by this classic tale. We love a reason to wear a beautiful dress—maybe something vintage to compliment the gorgeous Orpheum Theatre. Be seen and support an artful cause!
