We’ve been on the DL about this, but since we’ve burned every last bridge, we might as well drag our ugly secret out into the open: We’re an ex-bridesmaid. Truly, it’s shocking, seeing as how we’re lambs without a fleck of evil in us. In any event, we now have a hideous, electric-blue dress in our possession and are minus one monster friend.

When we got engaged, we decided that no one would find us knocking down buildings and spewing flames from our shrieking, demanding maw. Surprisingly, this game plan has been more than effective, and has let us keep our friends happy (surprising, no?). We also wanted to avoid looking like every other girl, so we sought out several tucked-away bridal stores. Two days, five stores and zero meltdowns later, we actually found the holy grail of dresses by sticking to our shop-independent nature! Those indie shops truly know how to speak our language!

P.S. We just realized the way to your hearts, dear readers, is by offering free goodies (does anyone want an electric-blue bridesmaid dress, BTW?)! This week we have a lovely bracelet from Tanya Lochridge (see below). Forward this issue to 5 friends and cc: picks@phoenixpicks.com and you could be a winner!

Princess Bride

A couple of weeks ago, we found ourselves being whisked away to the wild shores of the Oregon coast for vacation. For someone who lives where a wild-animal sighting is the dead kitten on the side of Chandler Blvd., our minds were absolutely blown by the thrilling sights of whales, raccoons and deer!

But the most wonderful animal we saw was our beloved gorilla, on one knee, asking us to be his banana forever. Of course we said yes and are now happily indulging in our list-making neurotic idiosyncrasies, perfect for the OCD bride.

On our list was Once in a Life Tyme Bridal. The fifth dress we put on was the one. It was unique, understated, it made our mother cry, and it was affordable. To top it all off, the woman who helped us, Nancee Brummel, could not have been nicer or more accommodating. Even with extra poundage on our frame, she made us feel special and beautiful. Suddenly we were Maria from West Side Story and the tune “I feel pretty…oh so pretty” might have even slipped out of our mouth.

Brew-ha-ha

Much like our good friend Sheryl, a good beer buzz early in the morning is all we wanna do on those lazy Saturday mornings. To achieve that feelin’ good vibe, we join the gal pals for a few Sunspot Gold beers at San Tan Brewing Company.

Served in hand-blown 18-ounce glasses, Sunspot Gold has a crisp, refreshing taste that’s perfect for escaping a scorching Arizona day and pulling an east-sider’s rendition of SATC—sans martinis or Jimmy Choos. By 4 pm we’re heading down memory lane, reminiscing about college hairstyles and men choices, and drinking the day away. When Sunday morning rolls around and the only thing getting us out of bed is the old folk remedy for a hangover. It’s back to San Tan Brewing for the build-your-own Bloody Mary bar!

We’re not sure how the bartenders know we love playing the sexy role of bar wench, or that we used to perm and feather our hair back in the day. Regardless, they went easy on us and made us try the stuffed Aegean Burger, which is pure Mediterranean beef bliss!

Hollywood & Fine

A recent Saturday afternoon found us firmly planted on the couch, nursing a bottle flu and scouring our DVR for distractions between sprints to the powder room. Obviously we’d forgotten that beer before liquor only lands you in the fetal position. With our college years behind us and a strict “no pink drink” policy in place, there is really no excuse for such behavior.

As we lay there watching Scrubs reruns, we reveled in the memories of Friday night fun that didn't include the devil’s drink. We longed for our high school days of donning our sister's 80's prom dresses or our grandmother's rhinestone cocktail frocks and cavorting around Phoenix on a coffee buzz.

Ready to relive simpler times, we opted to throw on our oversized sunglasses and revisit our inner 1950’s starlet. We knew Hollywood Regency could help us achieve that look with their delicious vintage offerings from fashion eras past. This Melrose-district retro boutique stocks the real deal in classic clothing, accessories, and furniture pieces. Stop by for some good clean fun on August 21 from 6-9 pm for the Third Thursday Melrose Crawl!

Call Me Hoppa!

Only 23 more shopping days left until Grandparents’ Day on Sept. 7. For grandparents who loathe to be called Granny and Gramps by our wee-ones, look no further than “You Can Call Me Hoppa! The Grandparents’ Guide to Choosing a Name that Fits.” Written by Phoenix native Lauren Charpio, the book was inspired by her own parents who wanted personal, nontraditional nicknames.

From Birdie to Bogey, “Hoppa” is a collection of idea-starters and heart-warming anecdotes. A portion of book proceeds will be donated to the Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC).

The Perfect Accessory

When we saw Tanya Lochridge’s jewels we thought about the amazing ways our BFF would rock her necklaces. Our BFF is the coolest girl we’ve ever known—in junior high, she pegged her jeans perfectly, she owned Keds in every color and has since become a master at accessorizing.

When you need a little oomph and something one-of-a-kind to dress up your classic black number, be sure to keep one of Tanya’s pieces on hand. They offer the perfect amount of class and sass!

If only you knew the struggles we went through to get this issue to press! Moving equals lots of boxes and no Internet for two weeks! Who can live without Internet these days? We definitely couldn’t. Seriously, we were scanning the streets looking for any connection to the virtual world (no luck) and hounding coffee houses for free WIFI (not really free, we’ve come to discover). See what we endure just because we love you so and appreciate all the wonderful things you say about us? In hindsight it really makes those sketchy Internet runs this week so worth it!

And please… don’t let the heat stop you from shopping! Please visit the businesses we mention in Phoenix Picks. Our mission is to support local, independent spots around town… and we need your help to do it! So stop in, and tell them Phoenix Picks sent you.
